Eight measles exposure sites have been named after a person who recently returned from Southeast Asia visited the locations without knowing they were infectious.

A school, two libraries and Byron Central Hospital are among eight locations named in a measles alert for the region.

Northern NSW Local Health District is urging people to check where they were last week after a person with a confirmed case of measles visited venues in Mullumbimby, Ballina, Pottsville and the Byron hinterland while infectious.

The locations do not pose an ongoing risk, but anyone who was there at the listed times should watch for symptoms for 18 days after their visit.

Measles Exposure Sites

  • Tuesday 15 September: Shearwater Steiner School, 349 Left Bank Road, Mullumbimby Creek, 9.30am–1pm.
  • Wednesday 16 September: Bush Blossom Explorers, Byron hinterland, 9am–3pm.

The health district says symptoms can take up to 18 days to appear.

People exposed at the listed locations should monitor for symptoms until the date shown for their visit on the NSW Health exposure list.

The first signs can include fever, sore eyes, a runny nose and a cough.

A red, blotchy rash may appear three or four days later, beginning on the face before spreading down the body.

Anyone who develops symptoms should call ahead before visiting a GP or emergency department and say they may have been exposed to measles.

This gives staff time to arrange care while limiting exposure to other patients.

People who are pregnant, have a weakened immune system or have an infant who was exposed should call the local Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055 if fewer than six days have passed since the exposure.

NSW Health also asks people who know they are unvaccinated to call if fewer than three days have passed.

The health district said 55 measles cases had been confirmed across NSW since 1 January 2026.

It is encouraging people born after 1965 to check that they have received two doses of measles vaccine.

For advice about symptoms, call your GP or Healthdirect on 1800 022 222.

The NSW Health exposure list is updated as new information becomes available.
