Braden Hardy, 38, did not appear in Bail Division Court on Tuesday morning, with defence lawyer Gemma Campagna speaking on his behalf.

Viral footage captures Ballina airport arrest

Footage filmed by a member of the public and posted to the Ballina Crime Reports Facebook page shows several officers restraining Hardy beside a police vehicle as he repeatedly shouts, “Get off me, get off me.”

Police were called to the airport shortly after 9.30am following reports a man had forced his way into a restricted area.

Officers from Ballina Police searched Hardy, allegedly found a knife and a saw among his belongings, seized the items and issued him with a move-on direction.

Police allege Hardy left but returned a short time later, failed to comply with the direction and assaulted a male senior constable during his arrest.

The officer was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries, while Hardy was taken under police guard to Lismore Base Hospital for an assessment before being transferred to Lismore Police Station.

Hardy was charged with destroying or damaging property valued at $2,000 or less, custody of a knife in a public place, refusing or failing to comply with a police direction, assaulting a police officer causing actual bodily harm, hindering or resisting police, and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

Bail was formally refused by Judge Robinson.

The matter was adjourned to Ballina Local Court on Thursday where Hardy will appear from custody via video link.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
